A) The following requirements apply to German citizens, EU citizens and students who have gained their university entrance qualifications from a German school:
The maintenance scholarships which are awarded to German citizens, EU citizens and students who have gained their university entrance qualifications from a German school will be calculated on the same basis as BAföG, depending on your parent’s income and/or your own income and personal assets. Irrespective of this, an independent book grant of 80 € per month will be awarded to all successful applicants.
You must be enrolled at a state-recognized university or college (e.g. Fachhochschule) in Germany at the time the scholarship payments begin. The foundation also grants scholarships for Master degree courses in other EU countries.
* Earliest application date: if you intend to enrol for a Bachelor or Masters degree, for a Diploma, Magister or State Examination, you can apply for a scholarship before your studies begin, but the earliest date for receiving payment will be the beginning of the first semester. We advise you to make your application in time for the start of your studies.
* Latest application date: within the prescribed maximum period of study you should still have at least four semesters before your final examinations, so that the foundation can support you for at least three semesters.
B) The following requirements apply to foreign applicants (except EU citizens) who wish to study in Germany:
You must be enrolled at a state-recognized university or college (e.g. Fachhochschule) in Germany at the time the scholarship payments begin.
* You should provide proof that you have already graduated with an initial professional qualification. This programme mainly supports students aiming for a Masters degree.
* You need a good knowledge of German, and we kindly ask you to provide proof of your proficiency. Please note that the selection workshop (interviews, group discussions) will normally be in German. Exceptions (interview in English) are, however, possible.
* Unfortunately, the current guidelines specify that we can not support foreign scholarship holders for stays abroad in third countries for more than four weeks.
The University of Sussex and Institute of Development Studies (IDS) invites applications for the MSc in Climate Change and Development for entry in 2010. Up to ten scholarships of £4,500 and three of £3,500 are available.
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Our global economy results in emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants which are directly influencing weather and climate. Climate change is already being felt, most keenly by the world’s poorest and vulnerable people. If these emissions continue unchecked, we will more dramatic changes in climate. The challenge of climate change is twofold. First, to make the transition to a lower-carbon global economy. Second, to adapt to the impacts of future climate changes. This will require difficult decisions about the way the economy and society are structured, and raises a range of difficult questions for development.
How will climate change affect food production, water resources and livelihoods in the developing world?
How believable are climate predictions?
How can we adapt to climate change? How will negotiations on greenhouse gas emissions affect developing nations?
What will ’low carbon development’ look like? How can we ensure equitable outcomes of climate change policies, locally, nationally and internatinoally?
As climate change becomes mainstream within development, there is a growing need for qualified professionals to address these challenges. These specialists must understand the complex scientific, socio-economic, technological and institutional issues of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
This programme equips students and development practitioners with the key skills and knowledge to work on the implications of climate change for global and regional development. You will acquire specialist knowledge of the causes of climate change (taught specifically for non-climate specialists), the physical and human consequences, and efforts to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate. Throughout, the emphasis is on the specific implications of climate change for poverty in developing countries, the processes of adaptation, and policy responses. You can develop a specialist thematic or regional enquiry in the dissertation. Teaching is shared between Geography, IDS, and SPRU.
Eligibility
An upper second-class undergraduate honours degree in either social or natural sciences. Applicants with relevant professional experience will also be considered.

Open Society Institute Undergraduate Exchange Program 2010-2011
The Undergraduate Exchange Program (U.E.P.) supports students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Mongolia, Serbia, and Ukraine in the United States for one-year of non-degree academic studies and service learning and one subsequent year in their home country leading a community service project of their own design. The program seeks to assist educational and civic development in Southeastern and Eastern Europe and Mongolia by exposing participants to a liberal arts curriculum, different models of classroom instruction, community service work, and civil society related programming. The U.E.P. combines the U.S. liberal arts academic experience with exposure to American social issues and civic development through involvement in community service related work. The program aims to create lasting ties among participants and their American colleagues thereby contributing to cultural understanding and tolerance.
Fellows attend a university or college in the United States for one year. While in the U.S., grantees agree to complete 25 hours a semester (a total of 50 hours for the academic year) of community service work in an area of interest to them. At the end of the year, they are required to return home to complete their degrees. Once back in their home country, grantees are expected to carry out a community-based service project of their own design, addressing an issue of importance to them. Throughout the term of the fellowship, grantees will attend bi-annual conferences to support their professional development and share personal experiences.
Applicants must currently be enrolled as a second-year student at a university in their home country to be eligible. Participant selection and university placement is determined by a panel of experts in the United States. Candidates do not apply to a specific university.
Eligibility In order to qualify for the program, an applicant must:
1. Be a resident of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Mongolia, Serbia, or Ukraine. 2. Be a current second-year undergraduate student studying American Studies, Art History, Classical Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Economic Theory*, Fine or Performing Arts, History, International Relations, Journalism, Law, Literature and Languages, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, or Women’s or Gender Studies. *Please note that economic theory does not include business administration or management. 3. Be enrolled in an accredited university in his or her home country. Ukrainian applicants must be studying at a university in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Odessa, Poltava, Sumy, or Zaporizhia to be eligible. 4. Be in the second year of study when applying and return to their home country to complete their degree following the program. 5. Have an outstanding academic record. 6. Demonstrate leadership or leadership potential and have a history of community and/or extracurricular involvement. 7. Have spent previous two years in residence in home country. 8. Be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English. 11. Be able to begin studies in the summer of 2010.
Selection Process Selection is based on academic merit, extracurricular and community activities, leadership potential, and knowledge of English. The number of awards varies by country, with approximately three to seven awards granted per country.
Participant selection is conducted in four stages. All applicants which meet the above criteria will have their applications reviewed and evaluated by a U.S.-based team of university representatives. Semi-finalists are invited for English language exams and an in-country interview conducted by U.S. education professionals. Applications, interview evaluations, and exam results are all considered by a final selection team, which will then recommend university placements for finalists. Final placements are determined by the U.S. universities. Students cannot determine their own university placements.
Financial Terms Program participants receive a full scholarship that covers tuition, room, board, living stipend, textbooks, transportation, and health insurance. No financial support or special provisions are provided for dependents or family members.
Participant Responsibility All participants must attend the pre-departure orientation program for one week in July 2010 (transportation, room, and board are paid for by the program), as well as conferences and other program activities throughout the academic year. The orientation and program conferences are academically rigorous, and fellows are expected to attend and complete assignments for all sessions. While in the United States, students must uphold the academic standards of the host institution and undertake full-time study for the duration of the program. Students are advised to take courses of interest to them outside of their field of study in order to diversify and broaden their perspectives. English language courses (as opposed to English literature classes) are discouraged. Students should elect classes that are at a junior or advanced level. No more than one language course or two introductory level courses of any discipline per semester will be allowed.
While in the U.S., grantees agree to complete 25 hours of community service related work per semester, a total of 50 hours of service per academic year. The type of work will be chosen by the student and opportunities can be arranged with the help of the host university..
At the end of the year, fellows are required to return home to complete their degree at their home universities. By accepting this award, participants agree not to enroll in a degree program at a university in the United States for one year upon completion of the exchange. Requests for visa renewals or extensions will not be considered. During their first year home, students are expected to complete a community service project or internship.
